A new CDC report has sparked fresh concerns about Diamond Shruumz, the company whose microdosing chocolate bars prompted an FDA investigation in June.
It has now been revealed that the company has also sold gummies containing an illegal substance.
Initial Concerns
Eight people in four states became ill as a result of consuming the retailer’s microdosing chocolate bars.
Following this the FDA was the first to inform the general public about Diamond Shruumz products.
FDA Report
According to the FDA right now, as of July 15, there were 69 illnesses in 28 states.
According to the FDA, “Sixty (60) of the 69 people have reported seeking medical care, 36 have been hospitalized, and there is one potentially associated death under investigation”
Microdosing Practice
The practice of taking small amounts of a drug, typically psychedelics like psilocybin, to boost creativity and mental health is known as microdosing.
Microdosing has become in popular in Silicon Valley, even among CEOs.
Psilocin Presence
According to Diamond Shruumz’s website, none of its products contain psilocybin or any other scheduled drugs.
Diamond Shruumz’s Sour Peach Apple and Rainbow gummies, on the other hand, were found to contain psilocin in tests conducted by the University of Virginia Health Toxicology Laboratory.
Classified Substance
According to The Metabolomics Innovation Centre, psilocin is a “psychedelic mushroom alkaloid.”
The DEA categorizes psilocin as a Schedule I controlled substance in certain states, including Virginia, where the study was led.
Hospital Evaluations
Five people were evaluated in hospitals between September 2023 and June 2024, according to the CDC study, after consuming Amanita muscaria-labeled gummies.
The report stated that Amanita muscaria is legal, despite the fact that it occasionally causes undesirable symptoms.
“Potentially Toxic”
According to the report, “People who purchase products advertised as psychedelic or nootropic mushroom gummies should be aware that package labels may not accurately represent the contents.”
The report continued to say, “That these products may contain substances that may produce unexpected and potentially toxic effects.”
Product Recalls
In June, Diamond Shruumz recalled all of its products, including its gummies and chocolate bars, as the number of illnesses continued to rise nationwide.
The organization said it would screen Prophet Premium Blends, the organization behind Diamond Shruumz, during its recall.
Consumer Adivsory
“Consumers should not purchase or consume any Diamond Shruumz-brand products,” the office added.
The effects of consuming psilocin are reportedly highly variable and subjective but most closely resemble effects caused by LSD and mescaline.
Psilocin Effects
The effects of psilocin can last anywhere from three to eight hours which can change depending on variables such as metabolism and food interaction.
Due to psilocin’s ability to distort the perception of time these effects can appear to last much longer.
Symptoms of Psilocin
Among the symptoms of psilocin are tachycardia, dilated pupils, restlessness or arousal, euphoria, open and closed eye visuals, synesthesia, increased body temperature, headache, sweating and chills, and nausea.
While the Diamond Shruumz products have been recalled and should no longer be available for sale the products may appear in some smoke/vape shops.
If you have seen a sore that is sontinuing to sell the recalled products you are advised to report this information to the FDA.
