The economy is in a crunch, and inflation is making things difficult for everyone. Even corporate organizations are trying to cut down expenses and look to other sources of income in a bid to stay afloat. If this is happening to the big guns, then you can imagine the effect of the state of the economy on the everyday man.
As it stands, the average American is doing their very best to cut down excesses where possible. However, they can only do so much with essentials like food, clothing, and shelter. Sadly, some individuals are employing nefarious means to make ends meet. Forgetting that everyone is trying to acclimate to this new normal.
A few days ago, a family of four walked into a local Subway restaurant to order some sandwiches, knowing fully well that they didn’t have enough money to pay. The husband started eating immediately after his order was served. But, when it was time to pay, the cashier found out that the family was $10 short of their bill. The poor cashier was already fishing into his pockets trying to offset the balance when an individual behind the family on the line called them out and started berating the husband.
The individual ordered them to stop playing on people’s sympathy and leave if they weren’t able to afford the meal. He clearly stated that the husband had intentionally set himself up; why else did he start eating his meal before everyone was served? It was an obvious ploy to leave the cashier with no choice.
The bystander, who was furious, also called out the husband for biting into the sandwich first instead of giving it to the child to eat. If indeed they were as hungry as they claimed, should the child not be given first priority? As far as he was concerned, this action was a further display of the weakness of the husband’s character.
In the video, the bystander went further to share that this was not the first time he was witnessing something like this. It turns out that several individuals had made it a habit to visit restaurants, eat and then pretend to be short on cash, leaving the cashiers, waiters, or innocent bystanders to foot the remainder of the bill.
The family eventually exited the restaurant, head bowed in shame. The husband was seen thrashing the sandwich wrapper on his way out.
There are several situations that could have led to the family taking such desperate measures. However, the truth remains that there could have been a better way to handle it. Many say that the family could have ordered what was within their budget or stated it upfront that they couldn’t afford it and would need some form of financial assistance.
An internet user drew our attention to the fact that the man didn’t share the sandwich with his child. Others are of the opinion that the bystander who called them out could have been less abrasive and maybe a little more humane with his choice of words.
Brownie points to the cashier, who maintained a professional stance through the entire fiasco.
