Support among religious Americans for Vice President Kamala Harris continues to grow, as 40,000 people attended a “Christians for Kamala” online rally this week.

While analysts have long claimed that Evangelicals and Christians overwhelmingly support former President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential race, new reporting suggests that Harris’ support among Christians is increasing.

After the success of fundraising Zooms — such as White Dudes for Harris and White Women for Harris — many progressive Christian activists and politicians decided to band together to create an online rally.

This virtual event — coined “Christians for Kamala” — quickly became a huge success, as more than 40,000 people attended the call. Meanwhile, more than $155,000 was raised for Harris’ campaign.

Various Christians participated in this event, which also saw many speakers discuss their personal faith and why they were voting for Harris come November.

Speakers included popular Christian authors, such as Antonique Smith and Brian McLaren, as well as politicians such as Senator Cory Booker.

This Zoom was organized by John Pavlovitz, a popular Christian author, as well as actress and singer Malynda Hale. Pavlovitz decided to run this event after attending the “White Dudes for Harris” fundraiser.

According to Pavlovitz, the event was organized because many Christians like him have become increasingly upset with how the Republican Party and Trump have used faith in their quest to reach the White House.

Pavlovitz added that many Christians believe in freedom of religion — and also freedom from religion. He feels that many Republicans now want to force their Christianity on all Americans, which he doesn’t agree with.

“We are Christians who believe America should be a place where people have freedom of religion but also freedom from religion,” he explained. “We know we can’t separate our personal faith convictions from the way we vote but we also don’t want our beliefs to be mandated for other people.”

Meanwhile, Hale discussed how she and others have felt as if the Republican Party has hijacked their faith.

“I have been a progressive Christian and I know like many, I feel like my faith has been hijacked by people who only talk about what they’re against,” Hale stated. “We know this election is important and that is why we are choosing love for the win.”

    Reaching All Christians

Those a part of this event explained they wanted to reach all Christians, particularly those who may be “in the middle” when it comes to politics.

They also wanted to offer a space to many religious Americans who are increasingly upset with how many Christian groups have been uncritical of Trump.

This latest “Christians for Harris” Zoom fundraiser isn’t the only event that has seen Harris’ support among religious Americans grow.

Recently, an “Evangelicals for Harris” group began running an ad that attacks Trump. In this ad, Trump can be seen saying in a clip that he doesn’t ask God for forgiveness.

This ad comes after many have recently attacked Trump for using the Christian religion whenever he wants — and some have claimed he’s not truly religious.

After showing this clip, the ad says, “Is there any greater denial of Christ than to say, ‘I do not need his forgiveness?’”

While many supporters have come out to thank these new religious groups for offering a different view of Trump and his faith, others have attacked them.

Reverend Franklin Graham has criticized “Evangelicals for Harris”, especially because they used footage of his father in their ad. Graham said on X, formerly known as Twitter, “Maybe they don’t know that my father appreciated the conservative values and policies of President @realDonaldTrump in 2016, and if he were alive today, my father’s views and opinions would not have changed.”

Polls have long shown that Trump has overwhelming support from many Christians, particularly Evangelicals.

However, these latest events, as well as other polls, have shown that an increasing amount of Christians and religious Americans may have decided to support Harris more in this upcoming election.

For many religious Americans, “Christians for Kamala” was a huge success. Other faith organizations and activists have also worked to create their own individual events that are not related to one another.

For example, an “Evangelicals for Harris” online rally occurred on Wednesday, while a “Catholics for Kamala” event will take place on Thursday.
