Prosecutors in the U.S. criminal tax case against Hunter Biden have leveled accusations against him of accepting payments from a Romanian businessman.
The businessman was supposedly attempting to who tried to “influence U.S. government agencies” in relation to a criminal probe in Romania.
Plea Entry
The son of U.S. President Joe Biden is scheduled to be tried on tax evasion charges on Sept. 9.
The U.S. Department of Justice made the claim in a Los Angeles federal court on Wednesday. The plea he entered was not guilty.
G.P. Involvement
ABC said the case originates from Hunter Biden’s work for Gabriel Popoviciu, a rich Romanian distinguished as “G.P.” in the documentation.
Prosecutors claim G.P. recruited Hunter Biden for legal work in late 2015 when Joe Biden was U.S. VP.
“Received Compensation”
In the filing, prosecutors said they intend to introduce evidence that Hunter Biden and a business partner “received compensation from a foreign principal who was attempting to influence U.S. policy and public opinion”
The subsequent intent was to “cause the United States to investigate the Romanian investigation of G.P. in Romania.”
“True Nature” of Work
Hunter Biden and the business partner “were concerned that lobbying work might cause political ramifications for the defendant’s father,” according to prosecutors.
Hunter Biden needed to cover the “true nature” of his work for G.P., prosecutors added.
Bribery Charges
According to the filing, G.P. was facing bribery charges in Romania.
A federal grand jury charged Hunter Biden last December with neglecting to pay $1.4 million in taxes between 2016 and 2019
Tax Evasion
While evading taxes he burned through millions of dollars on drugs and various luxury items.
When he filed false returns, the president’s son was also accused of avoiding the tax assessment for the 2018 tax year.
Felony and Misdemeanor Charges
He has to face three felony charges and extra misdemeanor counts.
Hunter Biden was convicted in June by a Wilmington, Delaware jury for separate charges.
Past Convictions
Hunter Biden was convicted of lying about illegal drug use when he purchased a handgun in 2018.
He has not yet been sentenced for this charge as he awaits his September trial.
Republican Scrutiny
The allegations leveled against Hunter Biden would be the closest that prosecutors have come to connecting President Joe Biden with his son’s foreign business dealings.
This is a matter which Republicans have spent years investigating.
Payment Allegations
According to prosecutors Hunter Biden and two of his business partners split over $3 million in payments.
These were purportedly from Popoviciu from November 2015 to 2017.
Hunter Biden’s Account
Back in 2021 Hunter Biden’s memoir attempted to address many of the topics which became targets for Joe Biden’s political adversaries.
This included his battle with substance addiction, his business dealings in China as well as his seat on the board of an oil and gas firm in Ukraine.
The latter position led to the first impeachment trial for then-President Donald Trump based on his pressuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zlenskyy to investigate Hunter Biden.
