People tend to refuse to accept scientific facts due to their beliefs and opinions that would go against this. As an example, religious people may refuse to accept scientific facts that go against what the Bible has taught them.
Even though many people will accept these scientific facts, others just can’t do that. Regardless of those reasons, there is a shocking amount of facts that some may have thought were widely accepted. However, they simply haven’t been.
Climate Change Is Real
Climate change is currently a big issue of contention. Many climate groups and activists have warned us for years that climate change will negatively affect the planet and that now all seems to be catching up with us.
Despite the increasing evidence that climate change is real, some people are still denying its existence. The main belief here is that climate change deniers do so because they refuse to accept that things could really get as bad as the science has said they will.
Evolution Is Real
Evolution is a tricky one as, for many years, there have been two groups: one that believes in evolution and one that believes in the religious version that God created Earth and the people on it.
The Bible’s story is just that, and there is no scientific evidence that any of it happened. However, evolution has been scientifically proven. So, many people struggle to accept it because it goes against everything they have been told to believe.
The Earth Is Round
As millions of people worldwide have gone to school, it is likely that at some point, there was a globe in their classroom to help teach them geography and where various countries, seas, and oceans are.
Despite this and the constant and unlimited amount of proof from scientists, a group of people still believe the Earth is flat. They claim this is because they have never seen a curve when looking at the horizon when scientists say this simply isn’t true.
Cold Weather Doesn’t Cause Colds
Growing up, it was likely that you were told by your parents, grandparents, or any adult that you needed to make sure you stayed warm and wear a coat when you went outside in the winter so that you didn’t catch a cold.
However, there is no scientific evidence to support this argument. Colds are viruses spread by coughing or sneezing onto something that someone else will touch. They cannot be caused by getting cold when outside.
COVID-19 Is Real
COVID-19 is still a very new thing and the global pandemic that ensued shocked many all over the world. Many countries went into lockdown, and people weren’t allowed to leave their homes unless it was for a serious reason. No one was allowed to see their loved ones unless they lived with them.
While it has continued to be proven that COVID-19 is a virus that quickly spreads and is how the pandemic happened, there are still many COVID-19 deniers who have been around since the beginning of the pandemic and have been spreading misinformation that has been damaging to people’s lives.
Vaccines Don’t Cause Autism
Vaccines have been around for centuries and have been able to cause some illnesses to become extinct. While they cannot do this for all diseases, they can at least prevent them from spreading.
A study was published in 1998 that claimed the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine causes autism in children and caused many parents not to give their children the vaccine. However, this study has since been proven not to be true.
HIV/AIDS Is Real
The HIV/AIDS epidemic first came to light in the 1980s, which saw similar denialism as was seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. Millions of people worldwide have died from the disease, and there was a lot of confusion surrounding it from the very beginning.
Despite all of the scientific evidence behind it, there is still a group of people who claim that HIV is harmless or that it doesn’t exist at all. Even though there is now a better understanding of preventing, testing, and treating HIV/AIDS, it still poses dangers to an individual’s health that some people can’t get their heads around.
Mental Illness Is Real
Mental illnesses are just as serious as physical illnesses. They affect millions of people worldwide and include illnesses such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.
The issue is that many people refuse to believe that mental illnesses exist, which creates a stigma. There has already been a lot of stigma attached to mental illnesses throughout the years that has taken that amount of time and longer to break down. Some simply believe that as you cannot see mental illnesses, they can’t possibly be real.
Birth Control Doesn’t Cause Infertility
Women have been able to use birth control legally since the 1960s. This has enabled women to be able to have sex without having to worry about the chance of them becoming pregnant.
However, some people believe that being on birth control affects your fertility. Science has proven that if you’ve been on birth control but want to start trying for a baby, having been on it won’t affect your chance of conceiving.
Intersex People Exist
Many people think that the only sex someone is meant to be is either a man or a woman. However, there is the possibility of someone being intersex, which many people deny.
Someone who is intersex means that they were born with various chromosome patterns and/or genitals that don’t entirely match up with either male or female binaries. While science has proven their existence, some people are still in denial.
Homosexuality Isn’t a Choice
There have been years of people being homophobic, to the point where many people don’t want their children or grandchildren to be taught about homosexuality or LGBTQIA+ rights in schools because they believe that this could turn them gay.
According to science, there is no possibility of just hearing about homosexuality causing someone to turn gay. Science says that sexual orientation is determined before birth, so homosexuality isn’t a choice like some people try to claim.
