While most single-term presidents are remembered by their failures during their re-election attempts, Donald Trump might be remembered for a win.
Trump’s bid for re-election might be marked by one of his biggest policy achievements. However, it still might not be enough to win this term.
A Big Win During Trump’s Presidency
During his four year term in office, Trump was able to secure a majority conservative share on the Supreme Court: an office that is usually evenly split between the parties.
At the time, Trump was exceedingly proud of the overturning of Roe V Wade. But now it could be his downfall.
Trump Failing to Complete Abortion Policy
Since his first term as president was marked by this massive decision, his followers are still looking forward to his concrete policy on abortion.
However, Trump has still failed to come up with a hard and fast policy. Currently, abortion rights have been handed over to individual states. Conservative led states are enthusiastically shutting down the right to access to the procedure.
Unintended Consequences for the Ruling
Although many conservatives and Trump supporters wanted to see Roe V Wade be dismantled in their lifetime, the effects have had some unintended consequences.
The abortion debate has now become a major downfall of the Republican party in the U.S. With restrictive bans in many states causing harm to women, some red voters are changing their minds.
Republican Women Turning the Tides
Although many people promoted the removal of Roe V. Wade in 2022, as women begin to feel the effects of the ban, many conservative women are changing their votes.
The ban does more than just restrict abortions for women who don’t want children. It affects women with unhealthy pregnancies, couples looking to receive IVF, along with creating an invasive environment around women’s reproductive health.
A Slippery Slope to Alabama
Because the overturning of Roe V. Wade created a new precedent, many states have experienced negative rulings since.
For example, the Alabama Supreme Court ruled in February that embryos outside of the womb should be considered “children.” This ruling negatively affects couples going through in vitro fertilization (IVF) and desperately want children of their own.
Trump Changing His Mind on His Own Success
The former president has called the six-week-abortion ban in Florida a “terrible mistake.”
Although his choice of words may have been used solely to try to defame his rival, Ron DeSantis, he has recently declined to comment further on the issue.
Democrats Gunning for Abortion Rights
Due to the overwhelming support that American voters seem to have for abortion rights, Biden has made this issue a center of his campaign.
Recently, Biden promised to sign any bill that would codify Roe V Wade back into law. He and Vice President Kamala Harris have both pledged their energy to fighting restrictive conservative laws around the issue.
Unable to Lock Down a Position on the Issue
At a campaign stop on Tuesday, Trump allegedly tried to have his abortion debate both ways, saying that he supported states rights and a right to preserving life.
Before that statement, he’s gone on record stating that a 15-week ban would make the most sense and supports the new idea.
Waffling on Big Issues Is a Big Problem
Many voters seem unhappy that he won’t nail down a position.
The Biden campaign is also taking this opportunity to make their stance clear and remind the voters that Trump can’t make clear sense of the issue that he created.
State Policies Failing
After the overturning in 2022, a wave of abortion bans hit red states. Many of the intended bans and laws were out on special dockets for residents to vote on.
Unfortunately for the Republican leaders, red states like Ohio and Kansas rejected the harsh rulings that would restrict access to healthcare for women.
Democrats Leading Ahead in Traditionally Red States
Optimistic talk has been raised about democrats possibly winning Florida.
While it’s unclear what might happen in November, the liberal party has made some big wins during midterm elections. Democrats won big in conservative Kentucky, running on a promise to protect abortion rights.
